FAQs

What is Perception Box?
Perception Box is a concept used to describe the factors that constrain our perception of reality. You can learn more here.

How does the proposal process work?
You can find detailed step-by-step instructions here.

How much money can I apply for?
Up to $900,000 over three years. This includes all overhead and indirect costs.

How do I know if I am eligible?
Carefully read the Detailed RFP Criteria.

Are there any other opportunities to apply for funding?
Not at the moment. If any new opportunities come up, we will announce it on our website.

When will I find out if my idea has been accepted?
This information is available in the timeline section of the RFP page.

Where can I go for help with my application?
Contact us here.

A project we’re thinking of submitting relies on self- and other-perception as well as behavioral measures to determine whether the intervention worked, but because the intervention involves expensive psychedelics, there will be no budget for a neuro endpoint. Is this kind of thing not acceptable?
It would be ideal to have something to track, and it would make for a stronger proposal. That said, a neuro endpoint (such as gathering neuroimaging data) is not mandatory.

Does the relevant previous grants relate only to the grants of the PI, or also to the institute?
It would need to be grants where the PI played a role. This is similar to adding a grant to your CV.

If we plan to submit a plan for a research group of a few members, do you have a limit on how many members of the group of the PI may have?
here is no policy about this, but you must justify the number in accordance with the budget.

When completing the LOI, is it only the sections BEFORE the “Total Amount Requested” that should be anonymized (without identifying the PI, their Institution, etc.)?
Yes, only information that may eventually go to external reviewers need to be anonymized.

Does a foreign institute need to have a NCAGE code or UEI number to apply to your grants?
We don’t require specific types of codes as this will depend on the country where the institution is based.

To what extent is the proposed research supposed to focus on expanded/contracted perception box states vs. effect of intervention?
The research can focus on either providing it can be justified within the scope of the RFP.

Will you be cross-referencing the contributors/collaborators if they also submit a LOI?
Yes, but we may allow people to be involved in more than one project at our discretion.

What will the full proposal requests entail?
The full proposals will be longer and two webinars will be provided to help applicants. The most noteworthy additional questions are:

  • Project Background Information

  • Aims and Hypotheses

  • Study Design

  • Budget Spreadsheet

Can you explain the lottery system of evaluation?
This will be similar to previous instances published here and here.

Do we need IRB approval by the time we submit and LOI?
No, it is not required at this stage. We will check for IRB approval before the first payment is made.

Are there any constraints on what the budget can cover?
There are some constraints following generally accepted legal guidelines and best practices. That said, the budget can be fairly flexible. For example it can include study materials, PhD students, subject recruitment, and data analysis.

If a project can be done in less than 3 years would it be possible to get more than 300K per year because the time is shorter?
Yes, pending negotiations with TBD at the contracting stage.

What are the differences between the data part in the study design and the data management?
The Data Storage section in the Study Design field requires just a couple of sentences to provide an overview of where data will be stored and how it can be shared. The data management field should include more details about this, including how data will be curated and what tools and processes will be used.

When writing the sections that are intended to be anonymized, how do you cite preliminary data without identifying ourselves?
You can cite the paper but don’t mention it as something that you wrote. It might not be possible to completely prevent reviewers from guessing applicant identities, but we strive to keep things anonymous as much as possible.

Are consultant costs considered overhead?
No, consultant costs can be included in the Direct Costs section.
